Here's a guide I posted over at skateperception.com (community dedicated to skateboarding filming and photography). I recently picked up a Canon Rebel t1i to mess around with and I wanted a handle to do some low-grip, follow shots. After some hunting this is my list.
Cheap, plastic, blocking your lcd. Theres the
X-grip AKA Camcaddie

Cheap, simple, go with

You can add some rails, coldshoes and all that if you want.
For about 150-190 you can go with my personal favorite so far,
the media cage cube.
This one's slick with foam handles, and two cold shoes already mounted.
