Stick with Crystal, She's kind of like a Mom. Check out this thread and scroll down to post #367.

Ashley, California is like several different countries in one place. You will have a chance to see a bit of everything here from deserts to glaciers. Sandy warm water beaches and rocky cliffs with cold seas crashing on them. The very north is wet rainy and low in population. The SF bay area is densely populated and full of quaint little niches and a variety of topography; sea, woods, skyscrapers, parks, and hills. Central Valley is warm/hot dry, flat, easy to navigate. The Sierra foothills are full of lakes, streams, forest trails and wildlife. I suggest you take a vacation out here and drive around for a few weeks and try to see some of it first hand. If you like, the people here could suggest specific areas to see (with pics) in different regions of interest.

ah hem..."warm" water beaches? only if it is red tide. :-) the water does not get warm like the water near florida or Hawaii. when we do get warmer water, it usually produces alge blooms.

Hey, it's all a matter of perspective.
Maybe Carl came from Alaska, and this IS warm water to him.

and I am from Berkeley originally too Crystal.
Alan cannot be "delicate"
1: He is always waving the stick smiley
2: I should ask him, "How's the air up there?" before he hits me with said stick
3: I'm climbing a ladder to get up to 6' and he laughs at me. I think he is over 6'
which is why I try to stay out of arms reach.
4: Now he is a wolf.

back to the topic at hand.
California is a very nice place to live, many things to do and see. Just a little "left" of center as far as the USA is concerned.

That probably comes from having been born in Boston.

Hey Windy, yes warm water...I dive Nor Cal usually in the 40's. When I go down south i.e. Channels Isles I wear half the wetsuit and no hood. No it isn't like HI or MX but it's the closest cheapest heaven to me. Actually I love the Monterey diving. Cold yes but so much sea life.

Okay not all of it's alive :-)

That's a giant sun star, dining on a dead.....seal?

Carl, what are you using for your underwater photography?
I used to have a Nikonos IV-A but sold it when I went to video.
I wish I kept the Nikonos, and never bought the video and housing.

That was a borrowed Canon point and shoot. Not sure which model. But it made fairly nice images... and yes that sea star was eating that seal. I guess the crabs didn't get the memo...

This was straight from the camera. Monterey 80FSW 48deg 25' vis

Okay folks, I think this is a classic example of thread hijacking.

Sorry 'bout that Ashley, and seriously, welcome to the forum.

Sadly, no! The economy sucks, therefore I don't have enough money to make it out there. However, I'm hoping to find a job and save up some money for a road trip within the next year. I will def be out there soon and will let you all know. Hopefully we can meet up for a photo hike.

I'm well aware of the economy situation. I won't go into details.

When you do make it out here, please be sure to look a bunch of us up.
Yes we can go for a photo hike, and we can even have a BBQ.
There are a few of us that get together on the odd occasion to go shooting.
The BBQ would just be a welcome addition (as would you be).
