Default hey you strobists... - 01-18-2010, 11:17 AM

has anyone done the make it your self synch cord? I have GOT to get off camera with my flash but there is no way I can afford to get pocket wizards at this time. But I'm itching to work out at least some of my needs right now.

Hints? confessions? hit me over the head?

I think there are alternatives to pocket wizards such as cybersyncs you can buy.

If you need to go the DIY route try this:

that is what I was looking at
my problem with the other wireless syncs is that they do not look rugged enough for me. Not that I'm hard on my gear...just that I use it alot and I hope to be as active with using flash too.

Windy,
I've been using the Cactus v2's for my speedlight with good success. I had a different set for my Alien Bees but I was getting misfires on them. Last week I ordered a set of RF-602s (1 transmitter & 3 receivers) for $78. These will work on both the speedlight and the ABs. I expect to get them next week and I'll let you know how they work.

Windy,

I have a set of the Youngnuo 301P off camera triggers.
They work pretty good, but last week I had one inside a softbox (yeah, the stobe and trigger goes inside the box in this one) and I had an issue with it not firing when I got too far away.
I don't know if the mirror finish inside the softbox was messing with it.
Because when it's not obstructed like that, they have a pretty good range.

I ALSO have the Yongnuo OC-E3 off camera flash cord. It broke on me one day.
I spent about a month trying to find out where I could send it back to seeing as the people I bought it from went out of business.
The manufacturer replaced it for me (but I had to ship it to China).
Also, the shipping back and forth took over another month.

I have cybersyncs that I like a lot. Cheaper than Pocketwizards, but not as cheap as DIY/ebay stuff.

I work at an antenna place, and although I'm by no means an RF engineer, I can look at some and say...that'll fail in this situation. I'm going to hold out for the gold standard but make my self a sync cord set up asap.

I was thinking about hacking my Youngnuo flash cable.
I want to cut it, and put some RJ-45 adapters on the ends.
That way I can make several extension cables of different lengths, and then have an adjustable cable and keep my E-TTL capabilities.

Shouldn't you use twisted shielded cable? Or at least shielded?
How many conductors are there and what size wire also?

I found link somewhere where they did it with CAT5 cable, and they claimed it worked perfectly.

And if it doesn't, I can always cut those RJ-45 connectors off, and go with a Mil-Spec connector and cable.
So yeah, I'm going to try the less expensive route first (seeing as I already HAVE just about everything for it).
