Default Lightroom importing photos from drive. - 11-19-2009, 10:49 AM

I am using the beta for LR3 which seems to be very nice and can import from cards. My question is how to import photos on my drive? I can find the files but it says they are of the wrong file type.
It has to be simple.

I hate to have to keep my photos on 16gig worth of cards I am taking.

if i have LR2 open with a memory card attached to computer via USB drive, it always asks me if it wants to import the photos.

personally, i always would organize my photos myself into folder, but i hear plenty of people who like organizing via lightroom.

Steve,
Yup, that is the easy part but what if the files are on your computer already? I can't seem to select those.
When you used film, where did you process it for the good stuff?

Kevin,
My workflow is
1) Move all the photos from my card to a directory on my hard drive using Windows Explorer
2) Backup that directory elsewhere (DVD in my case)
3) Disconnect the card
4) Open LR (I'm using 2.3) and Import and point to that location on my drive and import all the photos in the folder
5) Do a pass through all the images using P for "Picks" that I really like and X for "Rejects" that are so bad I might as well just get rid of them.
6) Filter on the Rejects, CTRL+A (Select All), and delete
7) Filter on the picks and work through them doing any post processing, (occasionally hit P again on an image to remove the Pick flag if I change my mind)
8) Export to JPEG for whatever I'm doing next with them.

I know there are other ways to import but this is the routine I use. Let me know if you have any more questions on LR. I use it for about 85% of my post processing and CS4 for the last 15%. Really has speeded up my post processing.

Thanks Roger, I can't seem to get LR3 beta to find my files. I know it is me and how I'm setting it up. It's looking for a particular type of file.

Kevin,
It looks like those file types are the Lightroom catalog and database file types.

The main problem is that you are in the Develop module. You can only import in the Library module. Switch to the Library module and the left bottom button should say Import! Bet it looks for image file then! Let me know if this works.

Kevin, you better hurry home. Alan has your autographed calendar and he might put it up on E-bay unless Southerby's calls first...

Uh, sorry Roger.
Yes it is important that you gave it to Alan for me and Thank You very much.
But alas, it is unfortunate that my "photo shoot" precludes me from picking up the "un-obtainium" calendar.

Did you get to TI with the car?
