Kevin, you come with us on Saturday and you can see the stitching on the top of the balloon bag (when it's 200 feet up!) Nice lens!

No Way! I would never see it again. Alan would make up some story that I never gave it to him and he would deny everything. He knows I couldn't raise any hell without my wife finding out.

I will get it, the canyons on Kauai will have no other lens do them justice on my crop body. ( Since Abel has the full frame goodness )
Roger, the 300 would not do for the balloons. I fear the slow speed and high ISO would not make for a good shot. If you could get them just lifting off with the full flame going and lighting the faces up that would be nice.
I did find out that the older non-IS 300 F/4 lenses were quite a bit sharper than the IS version. But I need IS for one of my special activities (No, not thong watching) pics in ~1 month.

I likey at ~10 feet, nice and sharp.

Alan is correct Roger, I can pick out details from the required 1000 feet away. I would have gotten an 800 or the "1200" but I get a little nervous and the image is all a blur.
Thanks! You guys are scaring everyone away from me :P but then they would be 1000 feet away again, hmmmmmm.
I was outvoted on getting the 17-40 too.... at least for now.

The first picture I think I scared both of them and the second picture I scared it. But now looking at the second picture it looks like I have a very dirty sensor now. No PP, since I can't figure it out and no filter since they mess up the bokeh.
Someone want to explain the "duck/lens" thing to me?
Lowell, anything good by the Waterfront/Shorline parks? After hiking around for an hour in the sun I have no need to stay inland.

Nice to see you posting pics instead of complaining about other peoples photos.

The duck lens thing.
I believe it's because of the fine detail you can get in the feathers when you get a good lens with good IQ.

I may be wrong. It's happened before. My daughter has that day marked on her calendar.

Can I complain about old avatars then? I guess I need a better lens or some non moving ducks, the detail is not there yet. Have fun at the races this weekend. I can whine it goes nicely and complements the soft cheese in my fridge.
Better pic??

I assume you mean the here in Martinez?
At low tide and right before sunset, maybe late afternoon, you get a nice glimmer from pools of water left behind.

Nice duck butts in the first shot.
These look good to me, maybe someone can explain to me what's wrong with them.

An excellent buy Steve but the 11th commandment states "Thau shallt not buy another lens".
Anyone else out there, depending on the date code this lens should sell for ~>$60 more than they are asking but the risks......
Enjoy your trip Roger!

Alan had balloon duty and Lowell and diaper doody. So off by myself I went.
I ended up trying to stalk Lowell over by Martinez today. Lucky me, I went around a hill and there she was BB-61, the battleship Iowa!

from the better part of 2+ miles away.

Very happy to see these guys, herons?

To finish it off nicely, this hawk was having lunch ~50' away.

I am beginning to think the 5D is able to focus sharper than the XXD models.

Looks like two Great Egrets. Black legs and yellow feet. Snowy Egrets are smaller and have yellow legs/feet.

Looks like you like your new toy!

Thanks Mike for the ID. Any guesses on the marsh bird and the hawk? The hawk had zebra striped legs.

Marsh bird = "Killdeer". They're cool birds to watch!

Couldn't even guess on the hawk. Did you see it fly? Red-tail Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Swainson etc...

Mike, if I had to guess it would be juvenile red tail. I did not see it fly, I turned to shoot the Amtrack and it left while my back was turned. The legs were black and white striped as it was hopping around doing something in the grass.
