Angry Computer died! - 06-21-2009, 04:37 PM

I got home late last night.

Today, I downloaded all the photos from the crappy laptop that I am returning.
Too many Blue Screen Of Death errors while trying to edit photos.

I got all the photos transferred to my desktop PC.
I was editing a photo, when we had a power outage.

The power came back on, and my computer won't boot.
It looks like the power surge took out my hard drive.

Yeah, right AFTER I moved all the photos over.

There's a little hope though.
My operating system is on my "C" drive.
I keep all my photos on my "D" drive.

With any luck, my "D" drive didn't get fried.

If it did, then I have my backup external drive. I had moved all photos from the the laptop to the external, and then copied to my desktop.

Edit: And my wife kept asking me "When are you going to get rid of that old computer?".
My answer? "Never!"

Well, the photos are safe on the D drive.
I took it out, and put it in an external case, plugged it into my old PC and checked.
All is well.

So I did the same with the C drive to see if I could at least get any data off of it.

It's toast.

In my efforts to swap out the drive, (the drive cage has a fan and a light) the fan and light quit working. So I looked inside the case to see if I could re-seat the plug for the power.
I was trying to seat them, and ended up pushing a little button.

It said "CLR CMOS".

It looks like I'm going motherboard shopping today.

Then you have 3x the problems. Save money now or or save in the long run.
You know how nice it is to be uploading a session to the server, streaming a movie (have the tv set up as a 2nd monitor) and editing in photoshop at the same time while running as stable as ever I was always a "PC" guy till I actually dropped the cash (under 2K) on my 24" imac. PC's are still in the house though. They make great paper weights

Did I mention that I got laid off three weeks ago? Dropping two plus grand on a new computer just isn't in the cards right now.

Nor is it ever.

Default I feel your pain - 06-22-2009, 02:34 PM

It sucks royally when that happens. My hard drive got fried last year. Lost tons of pictures. Tiger Direct dot com has some great deals going on right now. I have built my PC and upgraded 3 times from them since 2003.

Picture perfect day!

Well THAT was painful. I have the PC back up and running, and all of the Windoze updates are done.

Now I just need to reinstall all my other software and drivers.
Printer.
Scanner.
Photoshop, etc.

Call PG&E and have them buy you a new one :-)
They have a budget for these things, just as long as it was PG&E and not that FPE panel you have.
http://www.merchantcircle.com/blogs/...c-Panels/87330
and for a modest fee of food, sodas and a touchy feely of your equipment I can assist you.

Thanks Kevin for the offer.

PG&E doesn't know what panel I have, and yes it was the power glitch that did it.

As for the modest fee, I am all but done resetting my computer.
Just a little more software to re-load.

Alan,
That offer was for the replacement of your FPE.
Ignoring me again, are you?

Kevin, no I'm not ignoring you. I thought you wanted to help with the computer issue.

Lemme see what I can get a panel for, and I'll get back to you.

Should be around $200+ worth of crap at the Depot
~125-175A panel, 2 or 3 2 pole breakers, 2-3 arc fault breakers, ~15 single breakers. A couple dz. connectors, possibly a pullcan/gutter. Mr. sparky down the street would knock it out for $800-$2.2k
Like I was saying or as Abel puts it "Just sayin'" it all depends on how long you want to keep the home.

Well "Mr. Sparky" down the street happens to be pretty cool about things like that.

When I replaced the lights in my kitchen, he gave me all the stuff.
Cans, bulbs, wire, wire-connectors (yeah, gave as in wouldn't take any money for it).
So I know that he'd at least sell me whatever I want at cost.

Got any suggestions for a replacement brand?

I lean toward Cutler Hammer/Siemens or Square D in that order but I think anything out there is like comparing the IQ of a 1Ds MkIII and a L to a Brownie with the panel you have.
I do not recall any new crappy panels out there, just don't buy one made in China.

Well, today I finally got the computer back up to snuff.

I was having issues with my Pentium Quad Core Q6600 not registering in the Motherboard.
I flashed the BIOS today with the latest version, popped the Q6600 back in, and all is golden.

Kevin,
I talked to "Mr. Sparky" down the street on Thursday. He's going to swing by this week, and see what I need. I believe he's going to supply me with all Square D stuff.

Then you can help me add some plugs to my garage, and hard wire my lighting in the garage.

Oh, and how do you feel about hot swapping out a 100 Amp service for a 200 Amp service?

Just don't talk to me while doing that part of it and if you take a picture of me and use your flash...... I hope for your families sake you have life insurance.
No problem, until I see exactly how it is connected.

I would like to gently remind everyone of Rule #8

"8. NO brand bashing
We can all get along better without the typical brand bashing that takes place on other photo forums."

My personal take on that is that means everything. Cameras, computers, printers, whatever some of us may choose to use.
Thank you.
