Smile Battery Pack for Elinchrom DLite4 - 03-03-2009, 11:41 PM

Is it worth it to buy a battery pack worth $400 for my Elinchrom DLite4?
I don't shoot outdoors that much, maybe once or twice a month only but I heard this portable power supply for studio lights works well with Elinchrom Dlite4.

Here's the link

Hmm.. have you heard of people already using your model of strobe with that battery pack?

I know most digital strobes dont work well with some battery packs because of the voltage drop the packs encounter after every fire of the strobe.

--------------------------------
I just read this in the battery pack manual:

How do I know if my strobe or powerpack is compatible with the Explorer XT? Why not all strobes and powerpacks are compatible with the Explorer XT?

The Explorer XT is compatible to more digital strobes than the Explorer 1200 due to its increased power rating. It is now rated at 350 watts continuous, making it compatible to digital strobes giving 1-2 seconds recycle time to 400ws load. However, we cannot guarantee the compatibility to all strobes and power packs in the market due to the differences in the design or make of strobes and power packs of other brands. In a few cases, digitally controlled strobes will not be compatible with the Explorer XT. Because immediately after the flash is fired, the capacitors inside the strobe will draw a huge inrush current, which the Explorer XT cannot adequately provide. Thus, for a second or two, the voltage output will be less than adequate.

For analog flash, this is not a problem and can tolerate this voltage drop. For digital flash units, this will probably cause it to go on reset and return all its settings to the power up stage. Though this is not damaging to your flash or to the Explorer XT, but it will just not work properly.
--------------------------------

You may want to check into it further to see if your strobe will work with that particular power pack. maybe call the company and speak to their tech department, they may have an answer for you.

My Elinchrom is digitally controlled and they said that "In a few cases, digitally controlled strobes will not be compatible with the Explorer XT"
but I saw in other forums photographers using Explorer XT with Elinchrom DLite so I guess I will just try it and if it won't work, hopefully I can return it.
I also saw their compatibility chart (http://www.innovatronix.com/compatib.asp) that it works with my lights so I just have to buy it and try it.
My fingers crossed, hoping it will work just fine.

1 unit of Elinchrom D-Lite 4 works perfectly with Explorer XT with recycle time of 1-2 secs for 1/2 power and 3-4 for full power.
