Interesting read from a Seattle Times Sports Photographer.. I really enjoyed it.

I was shooting construction shots with a EFS 10-22 on my 40D - all wide angle stuff.

Chuck, the job superintendent comes up and introduces me to his dad. The two of them were standing right next to each other and it was a perfect photo op and here I am with one of the most non portrait lenses around. I took several shots at different focal lengths but all of them from a distance of two feet or less. A couple came out OK and Chuck was pleased with the photos on line.

Not long after that Chuck's dad had a stroke and died and my photo was the last one of the two of them together. A shot I almost didn't take because I had the wrong lens became a very important photo.
